Why We’ll Never Use Plastic in Our Dog Treats

Most dog treats come in giant plastic tubs or bags you can’t recycle, and we’ve all stood there, unsure whether to toss them in the trash or throw them into the blue bin. We think dogs (and the planet) deserve better.

Why Pet Packaging is a Problem

The pet industry produces millions of pounds of non-recyclable packaging every year. Why? Because plastic is cheap, light, and extends shelf life. But that convenience comes at a long-term cost, especially when most of it ends up in landfills or oceans. Most plastic is sourced from overseas, increasing emissions and shifting money offshore.

What We Do Instead

At Durango, we don’t use plastic. At all.

Every part of our packaging, from our FSC-certified cardboard tubes to our compostable bags is 100% curbside recyclable, compostable or repurposable. It's also 100% US-sourced through the supply chain, from cardboard to aluminum to labels.

  • Our Chiplet packaging is designed to be reused for storage
  • Our Topper tubes double as countertop jars
  • Our Chewmeric bags and labels are home-compostable
  • Our shipping materials are plastic-free too
  • Every product comes with a complete transparency guide, of not only our ingredients, but origins and sustainability metrics.

Sustainability = Systems

We believe sustainability isn’t just about labels. It’s about systems, how things are made, shipped, and reused. By sourcing locally and producing in small batches, we reduce waste at every step. Our topper takes waste reduction a step further by saving smaller off-cuts from our Chiplet and grinding them into a flavorful powder.

At Durango, we didn’t just make a plastic-free dog treat. We rethought the way dog treats are made, packaged, and delivered. Because good dogs (and good humans) deserve better.
